Character Spotlight: Trent

The character of Trent is introduced to readers when Cora calls him to console her after she had a disagreement with her current boyfriend, she seeks comfort from someone whom she can trust. Trent welcomed Cora’s call and what follows. 

After Cora informed him that she is expecting their baby, his responses were subdued, and he appears to more concern with the desire to rekindle their relationship. After the birth of their child, he makes a secret vow to his newborn daughter, he will always be there. 

There is ongoing disagreement between Cora and parenting their daughter. He is met by constant push back from Cora. The resistance causes frustration and as a result he fails to follow through with promises to have visits with their daughter consistently. 

As their daughter grows, he matures as well. He serves to be a mediator between a teenage daughter and her mother, being a calming influence for both. As his daughter faces dilemma and challenges while dating, she turns to him for guidance. He provides an honest man’s perspective, who himself made mistakes, giving fatherly advice rooted in experience.

 Trent showed his insecurity when he became aware that he would become a father soon than later. Trent faces challenges of trust, commitment and loyalty; he faces the problem directly after he becomes what could be at stake, his family.  Trent character is that of an ordinary man with flaws, but he shows up for family when is necessary. Trent greatest strength is the love of his children. Trent learns to respect the woman who he says,“will go in the trenches with him.” His growth, and to devotion to family simplifies an image of fatherhood.
