Character Spot: Kendra

Kendra is introduced to readers when she calls Ellis to invite her to a party. She belongs to Ellis’s circle of friends. The two women have known each other from school, making their friendship the longest -standing friendship within the group. The friendship is forged between four women, who meets for lunches, dinners, parties, and girl’s trips. They openly discuss their relationships, careers, and eventually, their children’s milestones.

Kendra is outspoken, witty, and authentic. She never hesitates to say what is on her mind. She often attempts to push her friends to step outside their comfort zones and take a chance, particularly when it comes to love.

What distinguishes Kendra’s character is that she is already a mother of a two-year-old daughter. Motherhood has given her a perspective on life and relationships that differ from that of her friends.

Kendra is remarkably honest about her own relationship. She never pretends her mate is perfect. She openly acknowledges her mate’s flaw and admits his shortcomings to the women. Despite recognizing those flaws, she continues to pray for him and remains committed to the man she chose.

She talks openly about the reason she remains in the relationship with her mate. He is the father of her daughter and the strong physical passion which they share. Kendra gives a reason why women should not wait to be intimate. Although Kendra can be blunt, her honesty never comes from a place of judgement. She genuinely wants her friends to experience love. She challenges them to take a chance while reminding them to establish boundaries and know what they will and will not tolerate.

When a man at a party, catches the attention of Ellis. Kendra encourages her to take a chance on love.

“I hope you did not act as if you are playing hard to get.”

“Please answer the phone when the man calls."

Although she is honest about the flaws in her own relationship, she does not allow her experiences to discourage her friends from finding love. Instead, she pushes them to live, have fun, and to be open to love.

Kendra is witty, outspoken, sincere, and loyal. She remains supportive of her mate despite his glaring flaws because she understands that relationships are complicated and that love does not always exist without imperfections.

Above all, Kendra genuinely values friendship. She is the kind of friend who will tell you the truth, encourage you to take chances, celebrate your victories, and stand beside you when things do not go as planned. Kendra is the authentic friend – the woman any woman would love to call a friend.
